Diet soda isn’t very different from regular soda. According to a study in the American Journal of Public Health, adults who are obese and overweight consume more diet drinks than healthy adults who consume much more food calories. This means that those who drink diet sodas end up consuming much more calories.

Other studies have revealed a strong connection between diet beverages and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, the American Beverage Association argues that correlation is not causation.

According to experts, newly-born energy drinks are stealing market share from traditional sodas, and energy drinks’ sales are expected to continue growing. Well, even soft-drink companies own their energy brands; PepsiCo sells Amp Energy, CocaCola owns NOS, and Dr Pepper has Venom Energy.

The caffeine content in energy drinks is actually alarming, and some of these drinks may include more than the FDA’s recommended allowance per serving (which is about 72 milligrams per a 12-ounce can).
