Many people believe that if they give up the sweetened soda and replace it with diet soda, they are saving themselves from the risk of getting obese. But the truth is far from what they’ve believed. Calorically speaking, this logical assumption could be true but this doesn’t mean that non-sugar-based soda is free from any dangers and side effects that can lead to obesity.

In a study carried out at the University of Texas Health Science Center, 475 adults were monitored for a period of ten years in order to measure the risk of obesity from their consumption of diet soda and compare them to those who didn’t drink soda at all.

The results were quite shocking. In fact, experts found that diet soda doesn’t help you diet as it is marketed, in contrary the consumption of unsweetened lead to a 70 percent increase in the participants’ waist circumference.

That’s in addition to the expansion of their waist by 500 percent, especially those who gulped more than two diet sodas per day in comparison to those who don’t drink soda at all.

The shocking results didn’t quench the researchers’ curiosity, therefore, they have undertaken another study on mice to find out what could be possibly causing this surprising and fast weight increase.
