This is Why Baby Memories are Hard to be Remembered

Last Updated on January 7, 2021

Your brain is almost like your phone storage. Once it gets full it reminds you to delete some of your existing files, pictures and whatever you have because the storage is limited and cannot keep all of them. Here comes your role to clean your phone from all what is insignificant and keep only the important things.

This is exactly what’s happening to your brain. It deletes early memories in order to make a room for new significant ones. Now, no wonder when you find yourself able to remember your friend’s birthday and nothing from when you were a naughty baby throwing food all over the kitchen. Find out what Sigmund Freud has to say about this on the next page!

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychotherapy, was the first to coin the term “infantile or childhood amnesia” and the first one to discuss it.

Trying hard to understand why and how it could even be possible for us to not be able to remember such an important stage of our lives, especially when we are under the age of three has raised his curiosity and caused his obsession.

Freud believed that this is probably occurring because very simply our brains at that age are still immature and couldn’t endure storing and organizing all the memories we had since our early years.

However, many other people explain that such a thing happens because of linguistic limitations. Since we couldn’t utter proper words at that age, we didn’t have a sense of who we were and we totally ignored how the world works.

Therefore, it is very normal not to be able to bring back such memories now. Read more on the next slide.

4 The Cut

The experiments and researchers made on animals helped scientists somehow understand even if a little about what might be going on to those baby years memories we tend to forget once we grow up; and somewhat relieved our frustration.

Not only humans but also animals cannot remember being a baby and this led scientist to understand that there might be another reason for that. The latter, according to scientists, is maybe because we tend to only store those memories that are more significant and important to us and abandon the rest.
