During an experiment, rats that had access to high-fructose corn syrup failed to keep a normal body weight. Another study published in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior observed rapid weight gain in rats that consumed HFCS in comparison to lab animals that consumed only sucrose and fructose.
Rats that have been fed a diet high in HFCS for 6 months displayed abnormal body weight gain along with increased fat deposition. These are signs of obesity, moreover, overconsumption of foods and drinks containing HFCS may be fueling the obesity epidemic.
10. Mercury Exposure
Mercury was discovered in a whopping 50% of commercial HFCS samples and almost 1/3 of more than 50 popular brands of food products and beverages contained mercury as well. Such products often include high-fructose corn syrup as one of the primary ingredients from brands like Kraft, Smucker’s, Hershey’s, and Quaker.
In fact, mercury is extremely dangerous in all its forms. Moreover, the quantity of HFCS in several food products targeted for kids is dangerously alarming. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that it’s highly important to minimize children’s exposure to mercury to preserve their proper nervous system development.
