Last Updated on January 7, 2021

“Healthy as a horse,” an old wise saying by horse enthusiasts that refers to a healthy and strong person. The metaphor stems from Ye olden days, at the time, horses symbolized all that is beloved and virtuous; grace, intelligence, strength, and most importantly, optimal health.

Obviously, being as healthy as a horse means having the physical stamina of one, but the question here is why would we talk about “healthy as a horse” if we are not going to contemplate the health lessons our equine friends can teach us?

#1 – Drink more water

Water is an absolute necessity for every creature. Yet, humans tend to forget how it fuels internal organs, boosts energy, and improves skin, hair, and overall daily functioning, as well as keep them alive. While both humans and horses can survive for a few weeks without food, they will die faster without water. Normally, horses drink approximately 5 to 10 gallons of water per day.

Although humans shouldn’t drink that much, we should, however, increase the amount of water we currently drink. To calculate your daily water intake in ounces, simply multiply your weight by ⅔. This number may vary depending on whether you are physically active or not. And the more dynamic is your lifestyle, the more water you should be drinking to make up for the fluid lost in sweat.

#2 – Plant-based diet

The equine diet is mainly based on grains, grass or hay, which are enough to keep these animals strong and healthy. Unsurprisingly, humans also do best when they base their diet solely on whole grains, greens, fruits, and vegetables. But humans tend to add meat, dairy, and processed foods, and then wonder why they can’t be as healthy as horses.

#3 – Eat whole, unprocessed foods

Unlike processed foods, unprocessed goodies have more vitamins, minerals, and also phytochemicals, which is a powerful nutrient found in plant foods. Whole foods are also full of fiber and good-for-you fats.

All of this provides your diet with a high nutritional value, safeguarding your body against diseases and offering you calorie-dense meals that will keep you full for a long while.
