8 Terrible Things that Happen when You Sleep Too Much

Last Updated on January 7, 2021

A study published in Sleep in 2008 proves that both short and long sleeping times can lead to fat gain and body weight in the future.

Another study published in 2010 in Social Science and Medicine found that serious health issues such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, are found to be positively linked to long hours of sleep.

Excessive sleep was also found to be associated with psychiatric diseases and higher body mass index, reported one study published in PLOS ONE in 2014.

Another important conclusion that researchers came to draw is that sleeping too much is not linked to other chronic medical diseases except those mentioned.

Sleeping for long hours not only will make you obese but will also higher the risk of diabetes. When you sleep too much, your body is inactive and its ability to process sugar is affected. Therefore, the high blood glucose will increase your chance of getting type 2 diabetes.

According to a published study in Sleep Medicine in 2009, both the people who sleep much and those who sleep less are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. However, the risk goes 2½ times higher for the people who sleep less than seven hours or more than eight hours.

The high blood glucose levels are predicted in people who get more or less than between 6.5 and 7.4 hours of sleep per night, reported one study published in 2013 in Diabetes Care. Again, it’s good to remember that being overweight and sedentary can be driving factors to diabetes.

Sleeping too much can ruin your mood and make you feel depressed. In addition to this, it will affect the function of your neurotransmitters, which in return will affect and reduce your physical performance.

Your physical activity is important as it increases the level of your neurotransmitters, dopamine, and serotonin. Let’s say that the higher is the level of those neurotransmitters, the better is your mood. Physical activity can also help you stay away from any stressful stimuli and improve your self-esteem.
