The habit of checking your phone before you finally close your eyes and sleep has become an addiction that is tempting enough to give up on it. So, sneaking peeks are just irresistible. I mean who could avoid WhatsApp notifications, Instagram stories, and Twitter interactions.

However, many studies come to reveal that being closely exposed to LCD screens can disturb your natural sleep cycle. In other words, exposing your eyes to the blue light your screen gives off can cause the production of melatonin to slow down or even stop. The latter is a hormone that induces sleep and without it, we tend to stay awake longer than we have planned.

Normally, our eyes are absorbing natural blue light from the sun during the day but when we are exposed by night time through the use of such devices, keep your mind stimulated and therefore disrupts the circadian rhythms that push you to sleep.

Many smartphones now have the option of “night mode” which can be somehow helpful in making the blue light less bright at night. Devices like Apple’s iOS have Night Shift which lets you control the amount of blue light you want to see during certain times of the day.

Also, Android has a Night Mode of phones running Nougat and above, while Amazon has Blue Shade for its Fire tablets.

It was revealed by a study carried out by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, which tried to measure over a period of one whole year the effects of cell phone usage on people in their twenties, that the overuse of mobile devices and the increasing number of reports of depression are directly correlated and connected with each other in both men and women.

A remarkable increase was observed in the levels of oxidative stress in the saliva of addicted cell phone users, which leads to the production of free radicals. These radicals are said to cause cancer as well as many other diseases, as it is shown by the conducted study by the Rabin Medical Center in Tel Aviv.
