#9 – Use Rice to Clean Glass Bottles and Vases
Glass bottles or vases with narrow necks are very difficult to clean because how the heck can you get a sponge in there?! So using rice to clean them is probably the easiest and most effective way. Pour a handful of uncooked rice into the bottle or vase that’s giving you a hard time, add a bit of soapy water, and swirl the combination around. The grains will scrub away all the dirt that sticks to the bottom. Finally, remove the rice (and dirt) and get ready to be amazed at the cleanest vases and bottles.
#10 – Make Rice Art
When it’s time for rice harvest, you would expect a whole bunch of leftover rice straw (wara) to accumulate and be thrown away. But this is not the case in Japan. Instead of disposing of ‘wara’, Niigata and Kagawa prefectures, Japan, had found a better way to use it through holding a Wara Art Festival, which mainly includes giant beasts and other magnificent sculptures made of dried rice straw. The results are truly amazing, attracting so many visitors every year. This festival is held every August 31st in Uwasekigata Park in Niigata City’s Nishikan Ward, where it will remain until the beginning of November. This can be a great and unique travel experience as well as one of the strangest ways to use rice.
