Selling harmful food to kids makes good money. The scary part is that companies spend about $1.8 billion every year to make your children want to consume their foods and beverages, according to recent FTC reports.
Surprisingly, breakfast cereal companies spend nearly $265 million annually to advertise their products, which contain 60% more sodium, 65% less fiber, and 85% more sugar than cereals marketed to adults.

1. Sugar

If you’ve ever eaten a bowl of children’s breakfast cereal, you’ll know that sugar is the most obvious culprit. According to a report issued by the Environmental Working Group, a child who eats one bowl of cereal every day for one year consumes a total of 10 pounds of sugar.
The report was based on the analysis of about 200 kids’ breakfast cereals. Besides causing tooth decay, refined sugar has absolutely no nutritional value, and when consumed in large doses, it can result in obesity and diabetes.

2. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

HFCS is the most common sweetener found in children’s cereals. An excess amount of this sweetener can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. It has also been found to contain mercury, the toxic heavy metal. Moreover, other toxic chemicals are also used in the manufacturing process of HFCS, such as glutaraldehyde.
Following the increasingly negative image of HFCS, the Corn Refiners Association has created a variation called HFCS-90, which allows labeling to claim that the product doesn’t contain HFCS.

3. GMOs

This might surprise you, but the corn syrup and sugar in most common children’s cereals are derived from GMO-based products. There isn’t much known about the long-term effects of GMOs consumption, but recent evidence indicates that it’s far away from being safe.
