It is very possible that your neck pain is caused by a pinched nerve or strain, but serious conditions like meningitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer can also cause neck pain.

• Meningitis is an inflammatory condition of the membranes surrounding your spinal cord and brain, and the reason behind that pain is stiff, according to the Mayo Clinic.

• Rheumatoid arthritis would cause inflammation of the joints, which could be the ones located in your neck, causing gradual damage and painful swelling to your joints and pain, according to Cleveland Clinic.

• Cancer can harm your neck depending on the type you developed. For example, you could have developed bone cancer that is targeting the bones of your neck, you have a tumor that compresses one of your nerves.

If your neck pain hasn’t been getting better (or getting worse) even after weeks of home treatments, then you shouldn’t hesitate to see your doctor ASAP.
