It is not a secret that our home should be a healthy place where we can relax and leave all the stress behind us. But, what about our work place?
Most people believe that it doesn’t matter how toxic the workplace can be as long as you don’t spend your whole day there, and as long as you can get to go home afterwards where you can rest your head, but it turned out that it is as important as anywhere else, maybe even more, and that’s because a toxic work environment can make a very bad impact on your health.
So, it is very important to feel comfortable and happy where you work and with your co-workers.
#1 – Your workload in unrealistic
If you find yourself constantly in trouble to complete your daily and weekly tasks, despite your hard efforts, then you may be working in an unrealistic workload. Dealing with these situations can lead to anxiety and depression, and in the long-term, you will start experiencing many burnouts, high level of turnover, and low morale.
According to many psychotherapists, you have to schedule time off when you can relax and take a break in order to engage in calming practices. Keep in mind that all of those mental disorders could actually affect your health very negatively.
#2 – You are expected to work more than 8 hours
The only acceptable case is if the essential for your profession is to work more than eight hours, but if you work eight hours, then it shouldn’t be expected from you to come in early or stay late.
According to experts, people who work long hours over an extended period of time are more like to experience depression. So in order to help yourself, you have to add self-care to your priorities.
Once you give yourself the much-needed break, you will have opportunities to be more creative, effective problem solver, fresh thinker, and above all that, happier!
#3 – You feel anxious throughout your workday
There are many reasons that could trigger anxiety, and they could all be from outside work, but if you work in a toxic environment, then there is a good chance your level of stress is even higher. So if you want to know if it is affecting you, answer these questions with all honesty:
– How is your appetite?
– Do you get stomachaches each workday?
– Do you feel tense up before, and during work?
– Are they any pains or aches that have worsened?
Our bodies tend to send us signals every time our mind is struggling, which is why it is very important to pay attention to them.
#4 – There is harassment, bullying, and name calling
We have always believed that bullying and harassment will be left behind with our schools and children playgrounds, but apparently, they follow us to adulthood, too, especially in the workplace.
So if you are experiencing angry outbursts, name calling, oppressive behavioral standards, and cultural insensitivity, then we recommend addressing the problem with human resources. Don’t ever hesitate to defend your right, seek legal support, and request to transfer that person away.
#5 – Co-workers gossip behind each other’s back
Gossip is not okay anywhere, and there should not be any tolerance for it where you work. By listening and contributing to it, you are probably leaving people feeling hurt and manipulated.
So it is best to walk away from any gossip, maintain a positive mindset, and don’t add any negative comments. Instead, you can complement the co-worker on their kind gestures, skills they bring to the team, and their work ethic.
#6 – You are pressured to eat with the crew
It feels nice to be invited to eat with your co-workers, but if that invitation comes with insults and badgering if you have other plans, then that’s not okay. So if you always feel pressured to sit at the same table with your co-workers, or you have to go out with them to restaurants, then it is time to put a stop to it.
No one should force you to do anything you don’t want, especially if it means ruining your original plans.
#7 – You are always subjected to criticism
If you find yourself getting nervous to participate in conversations, especially during meetings, then your work environment is toxic because there is a high chance that your fear comes from previous experiences of criticism.
If you made a statement that came back at you with criticism or punishment, then that may affect your innovation, creativity, and motivation. It is very important to feel safe sharing all your thoughts and ideas, which is why we suggest talking to your supervisor about better ways to communicate to gain clarity, if possible.
#8 – You can’t reveal the mental illnesses you are experiencing
Anyone with a physical or mental disability can’t be discriminated against in the workplace, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. However, you have to reveal your problems and talk about them in order to get rational accommodations.
In general, you have to know your rights and you have to speak out loud about them, you can start by talking to human resources counselor.
#9 – You feel like you are going to get fired any minute
In some workplaces, you may notice that there are constant changes and high turnovers, which can make the employees be anxious and fearful. This method is not healthy or normal because it can cause long-term emotional and physical distress.
The best way to protect yourself is by staying resilient and focusing your energy on things that can keep you healthy and sane, like eating clean, exercising daily, and taking care of your emotional/mental health.
#10 – Your family or friends notice a difference
If you have been hearing a lot of comments from people who are close to you regarding your mood or demeanor, especially after you took the job or when it became toxic, then you have to listen to them. Just the fact that they have noticed a negative change in your behavior and mood can say a lot about what you are going through.
So, you don’t have to get defensive, just listen to what they have noticed and observed and use their support to manage the stress you are dealing with in the workplace.
