The last thing you might ever expect is to be at death’s door when excessively consuming soy sauce. This might sound surprising but this delicate yet salty flavored sauce can end your life and in the luckiest cases, you will survive but with fatal and permanent neurological problems.

Back to 2013, a 19-year-old man from Virginia accepted to drink 0.9 liters of soy sauce as a dare. The guy went into a coma and almost died from the very high amount of salt in his body.

This latter condition is scientifically known as hypernatremia and occurs when the bloodstream becomes completely saturated as a result of the excessive and high amount of salt in the body.

Therefore, to lower the salt concentration, the bloodstream starts to draw and absorb the water from all the other parts of the body, including the brain which in turn may shrink and bleed in case it loses water.

According to reports, what happened to the guy right after consuming the soy sauce was really scary and frightening. He began to have seizures and his friends immediately took him to the hospital.

However, he had fallen into a coma and the doctors rushed around to help him out by flushing the salt from his system using a combination of water and sugar dextrose. Luckily, his sodium levels returned to normal but he remained in a coma for three days before waking up healthy and unharmed.

The doctor said that it’s really a miracle because he was the first person to overdose on such high amount of salt and survive without any neurological problems.

Okay, this might be surprising because normally vitamins are supplements that are supposed to improve your health and make you feel better. In fact, too many vitamins can actually put your life at risk and cause you some forms of cancer as well as many other health benefits. Normally there are the water-soluble vitamins and the lipid-soluble ones.

Luckily the first type can be easily and automatically flushed out of the body through urine while the other type of vitamins, such as vitamin A is more likely to be stored in body fat and build up to toxic levels leading to liver damage, birth defects, and even cancer.

A study conducted by the National Cancer Institute to test the effectiveness of vitamin A in preventing the occurrence of prostate cancer exposed that men who took the vitamin A supplement were 17 percent more to develop a prostate cancer than those who did not take the vitamin at all.

Still, this doesn’t mean that water-soluble vitamins can be taken excessively. Water-soluble vitamin C, for instance, can be easily flushed out but too much of it can lead you to an overdose leaving you suffering from Diarrhea, stomachaches, and kidney stones.
