#1 – Your Phone Can be Dirtier than
Your Toilet Seat
Somehow we have become extremely addicted to our little smart devices. We carry them with us wherever we go and we feel a tad twitchy when separated from them. There are some people who cannot help but carry their mobile phones with them to the restroom. If you are one of these people then your situation is complicated and your health is at risk.
Some studies have exposed that a Smartphone can be dirtier than the toilet seat. Don’t be surprised because this is possibly true as your phone is far dirtier than you have imagined. One study showed that 1 in 6 phones is actually contaminated with fecal. I bet you didn’t expect that!
Well, your phone can also contain lots of germs, bacteria, and viruses, especially if you don’t clean and sanitize it every now and then. The bright side of the issue is that your phone is a hard surface, the fact that makes it hard for the germs to survive. Still, it is wise to wipe down your phone as often as you can.
#2 – Your Phone Can Cause You “Text Neck”
Not only the germs that put your life at risk but also the posture you take while using your Smartphone. Whether you are chatting with friends or just busy swiping on Instagram posts, spending hours with your head dropped down can cause you neck cramps.
This unhealthy position can cause a certain pressure and increase the stress on the neck. This stress will, therefore, generate severe and constant aches and pains, tightness and possibly wear and tear on joints. In addition to that, it will damage your posture and give you an unattractive look of “turkey head”.
Instead, you can do something to avoid the pain and adjust your posture. All you need is follow this simple exercise: Take the time to stretch and arch your back every 20 minutes without leaning forward. This will help you hold your phone to a higher position when you text. As for your posture, practice more of the Yoga and Pilates to strengthen your muscles and avoid the pain.
#3 – Talking while Walking Can Cost You Dearly
Walk and talk is the new trend these days. Everyone is busy speaking on the phone, texting, checking WhatsApp messages, and some are even playing candy crush.
Unfortunately, people are aware of the tremendous risk to which they are exposing themselves, still, they don’t change and they don’t take their precautions.
You might think that it’s just a quick text that won’t even take some few seconds of your time but guess what, those few seconds are enough to trip into a parking car meter while walking in the sidewalk or be killed in a car accident while crossing the street.
If it was an emergency and you are obliged to use the phone, stop for a moment, do what you have to do, and then continue walking safely.
Accidents caused by smartphones don’t always happen outside in the street, but also inside the house. In most cases, people end up with broken bones, head injuries, and strained tendon and muscle.
#4 – Can a Smartphone Cause You Cancer?
Can your cell phone cause you the deadly disease of Cancer? Well, still nothing is proved and scientists are trying their hardest to find out if the radiation coming from the cell phones we are daily and excessively using is associated with cancer and growing tumors found in people.
While the long-term effects of a cell phone radiation remain unknown and many answers are left unanswered, you’d better limit the use of the device or you can use the loudspeaker, headset or earpiece.
#5 – Your Mobile Phone Can Cause Trigger Thumb
One of the biggest problems that many people are nowadays suffering from is trigger thumb. The latter condition is as a result of the repetitive and strained use of the finger and it is a painful inflammation at the level of the tendon that bends and flexes your thumb.
When the tendon is inflamed, it thickens and can’t slide freely. The treatment of this painful experience is easy and requires your determination and sacrifice. All you need to do is avoid texting too much and holding your phone tightly, even better, try as much as you can to stay away from your cell phone.
#6 – Your Cell Phone Can Make Thumb Arthritis even Worse
If you don’t stop sending those “OMG” messages to your friend and keep playing Angry Birds, then you are more likely setting yourself for a joint pain.
It’s true that cell phones are not proved to develop thumb arthritis but if you have it then you’d better try to cut down on using your cell phone, otherwise, your symptoms will get worse.
Therefore, you will be experiencing pain and tenderness at the base of your thumb where it meets the wrist. Unfortunately, there is no cure for such condition but giving your phone a break, wearing a splint and medication can help you feel much better.
#7 – Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is a condition where the ulnar nerve is irritated and cause a certain numbness and tingling in the ring and small fingers, pain on the inside of the elbow or forearm, and weakness of the hand.
This can happen as a result of leaning on your elbow while texting or bending the elbow while holding the phone to your ear. The latter actions put a certain pressure on the ulnar nerve and therefore cause irritation.
The best treatment to follow is avoiding actions that cause the symptoms. Whatever you are doing, take some rest and give your arms a breath. Move them in different directions to relax. Wearing a night splint can be always helpful in your case as it will keep the elbow from bending.
#8 – Smartphones Can Interfere
with Medical Devices
People who are using life-supporting medical devices should immediately talk to their doctor if they have felt or noticed that the medical devices are no longer working effectively especially if this happens at the same time of using the smartphone.
The latter is said to be able to make those medical devices less effective, which can put your life at risk and create a serious health issue, especially if you are using devices like pacemakers or implantable defibrillators. Hearing aids can also lose their efficacy when near a smartphone.
#9 – Eye Problems
The more time we spend staring at our phone screens, the more blue light our eyes absorb. And the closer the Smartphone screen is to our eyes, the more painful and tired our eyes become. This blue light may even damage your cornea and vision.
Therefore it is best to avoid prolonged screen usage, limit the use of blue-light digital devices, and of course should you not forget to take a break from your phone every now and then.
#10 – Health Care Mistakes
According to one study, only one single distraction caused by a Smartphone can be responsible for 12 percent of health care mistakes in checking symptoms and in proper treatment. So, it is always possible that doctors and nurses make mistakes too often if they don’t keep their phones away when working. It looks like the smarter our phones get, the dumber we become!
