This might surprise you but the food you eat can greatly affect the health of your teeth, especially that some foods can cause plaque, which eventually can lead to serious gum diseases and sometimes tooth decay.
#1 – Dried Fruit
Eating dried fruits is worse than eating candy and can damage your teeth and ruin your smile. According to Stephen J.Stefanac, who is a professor of oral medicine and periodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, dried fruits contain a high amount of sugar and even worse can get stuck between your teeth.
The latter can lead to the development of cavities. Hence, to avoid this issue, you should stop eating dried fruits and replace them with fresh ones instead.
#2 – Soda
It is not surprising at all to find out that soda is not the best beverage for your teeth. In fact, only a 12-ounce can of soda contains more than 39 grams of sugar, say 10 teaspoons of sugar!
However, this is not the only problem as soda is also a very acidic drink, which can break down the enamel. So, imagine what could happen to your teeth if you sip soda all day long!
#3 – Juice
Bottled juices are not any different from soda! They are highly acidic and loaded with sugar. Therefore, drinking bottled juices on a daily basis can lead to many serious issues, including tooth decay.
However, if you can’t imagine your life without them, you can at least opt for apple juice. One dentist, Tyrone Rodriguez, says that apple juice is free from added sugars.
He also suggests that you water down apple juice to decrease the natural sugar or just prepare your homemade juices.
#4 – Pasta Sauce
Tomatoes are healthy and rich in essential nutrients and vital vitamins. But they are also acidic and can damage the enamel, says Dr. Quartey.
What’s even more surprising is that eating tomato sauce with spaghetti can even double the damage and that’s due to the fact that the carbs in the pasta can help feed the cavity-causing bacteria.
A better alternative is pasta with cheese.
#5 – Bottled water
Bottled water can be as acidic as coffee or tea. In fact, these waters may also contain minerals added for flavor, which will eventually increase acidity. The best thing to do is to opt for a refillable bottle with water from your tap or look for the word ‘’distilled ‘’on the bottle. The latter word stands for waters that are less acidic.
#6 – Apple Cider Vinegar
It’s true that vinegar is widely touted for its detoxifying properties, but it’s important not to forget that it’s also highly acidic and can erode tooth enamel. In fact, people who drink apple vinegar are found more likely to develop teeth issues.
Hence, to avoid such issues, you should always dilute the apple vinegar with water. Then, drink it in one sitting and make sure you rinse your mouth well.
#7 – Coffee And Tea
Whether you prefer drinking tea or coffee, they are both very effective drinks that can help you maintain your energy and focus during the day. However, they are definitely no friends to your teeth!
They can dry out your mouth due to their acidic and diuretic nature. So, drinking tea or coffee can increase your risks of developing cavities and gum diseases, explains Dr. Rodriguez. To protect your teeth, make sure you swish with water!
#8 – Gummy Vitamins
We cannot ignore the fact that gummy vitamins or fiber supplements are still a piece of candy. This means that they contain sugar and what’s even worse is that they can get really squishy and sticky when you take them leading to cavities. Consider other healthy alternatives such as vitamins you swallow or at least chewables that crumble.
#9 – Flavored Chips
While hard chips can cut your gum and feed the bacteria on your mouth due to the carbs they contain, flavored chips can act like sandpaper on your teeth. They are highly acidic and can wreak a havoc on your teeth.
This way, the more extreme the flavoring, the worse it is. It is, therefore, better to opt for some healthy nuts or plain air-popped popcorn.
#10 – Yogurt
This might be really surprising as yogurt is loaded with probiotics and calcium, that are normally good for your oral health. However, some types of yogurt, including, the Greek type might come with sweet fruit purees where a ton of sugar and acid are added! Instead, try to add cut-up fresh fruits to your plain yogurt.
