This is what Happens when You Stop Drinking Soda

Last Updated on January 7, 2021

Do it for your health, beauty, and wallet. In fact, physicians, public health experts, and researchers all believe that soda is to blame for many health issues, including premature aging, obesity, stroke, heart attack, type 2 diabetes, and gout.

Although soda is linked to all that is terrible and harmful, the good news is that the negative effects can be reversed. Give it up and see what happens.

#1 – You Will Get More Sleep

You Will Get More Sleep

Sugary drinks like soda, fruit juices, and energy drinks impact your precious brain. (And you shouldn’t allow anything to mess with your brain!)

Normally, the human body produces certain chemicals to remind us that we need to procreate, go to the bathroom, sleep, and eat. But soda blocks one of them, the need to sleep!

Soda contains caffeine, which is a popular stimulant that you may like since it keeps you awake during critical events (exams, meetings, etc) but you fail to consider that the coke you gulped can keep you up at night as well.

The National Sleep Foundation warns that even moderate caffeine consumption can result in sleep disturbances and insomnia.

#2 – You Will Start to Remember Things Better

Not only your sleep reminder goes off but you also become forgetful because of soda. According to a study from the University of California in LA, consuming sugar over a long period of time could damage memory and learning.

Researchers discovered that lab animals on sugar-rich diets had decreased quantities of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which affected their memorizing and learning abilities. So in case you want to sharpen your memory, you know where to start…

#3 – Your Heart Will Be Grateful

Besides messing with your brain, soda troubles the way your heart functions, mainly due to its caffeine content and other harmful components. Actually, caffeine can increase urine production, stomach acid secretion, heart rate, body temperature, blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood flow to the extremities and skin.

As long as you drink soda, your risk of having a heart attack will continue to rise, according to researchers at HSPH, while a reduced intake of this sugary drink has been linked to a decreased risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and remarkable weight loss.

#4 – Your Skin Will Be Grateful Too

Research from the University of California, San Francisco, highlights that soda consumption causes your skin to age prematurely. It was found that individuals who had more sugary drinks had shorter telomeres (the ends of chromosomes that exist only to protect the chromosome.)

Although telomeres shorten naturally as we age, drinking soda and other bad habits make them shrink too soon. To avoid this, you should opt for a healthy diet and lifestyle, and of course, forget about soda.

#5 – Your Smile Will Make People Fall in Love

We all know that all types of soda aren’t good for your teeth. The acids in soda damage the enamel, which results in cavities and tooth decay.

In a study on how drinking soda impacts oral health, researchers recommend dentists to educate their patients about the terrible effects of soft drinks consumption as well as advise them to cut it off or at least limit it.

It’s also worth mentioning to only brush your teeth one hour after consuming anything acidic and use toothpaste that contains fluoride and minerals.

#6 – You Will Have Amazingly Beautiful Hair

Indulging in sugary things such as soda can result in hair loss, as states the American Hair Loss Association. Although it may seem far from being possible, it has a reasonable explanation.

Sugar has an impact on your hormones, notably the one called dihydrotestosterone, which is responsible for hair loss. So it makes sense that reducing your sugar intake can help you control this hormone as well as the amount of hair that you’d like to stay on your head.

#7 – You May Lose Weight

You May Lose Weight

Well, obviously, consuming soda and other sugar-filled beverages leads to extra pounds. So if you want to lose some, you should simply discard the soda.

According to studies, replacing soft drinks with healthier beverages can result in some weight loss. As stated in the journal Pediatrics, a moderate body weight reduction was shown in a group of teenagers who were asked to switch for a non-caloric drink instead of soda.

Another study revealed that replacing soft drinks with water or healthier drinks resulted in 2% to 2.5% weight loss in obese and overweight adults.

#8 – You Will Simply Feel Much Better

You Will Simply Feel Much Better

You’re going to feel good inside and out. Drinking soda and other sugar-loaded drinks so often is associated with a variety of health problems that can make you feel anything but good. These include serious kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity, which in turn trigger heart disease and many types of cancer.

If all of the aforementioned reasons weren’t good enough to give up soda, I don’t know what else could be. Even the good taste isn’t worth all the terrible health issues it comes with (or the money.)

Don’t tell me it’s hard, it’s just coke! I used to drink at least 3 large cups of soda every day for more than 5 years, and once I’ve decided I should stop, I stopped the next day and didn’t have any for 7 years now. It’s all about how much you want to really do it.
