Stop Storing These Groceries the Way You Do Right Now!

You look at your fruit basket and you see a great assortment of colors that satisfies your eye before your stomach!

You go to your fridge to get what you need to cook a great recipe you’ve found out about recently, and you find that some of the essential ingredients that you stored away in your fridge have gone bad—you didn’t sore your groceries well!!

Food is a delicate thing, and it could easily go wrong if not stored correctly. If all of your groceries are bad (vegetables and all), then there’s no point of having a delicious fruit basket waiting from you!

There are things to keep in mind concerning how to store food in the fridge, or anywhere for that matter. Your skills should extend well beyond saving money on groceries while grocery shopping—you should learn how to store food to ‘save’ the groceries themselves!

In this article, we are going to tell you about that which you do wrong about storing the groceries that are on this list, and what you should do instead to better store them after you’ve brought them from the nearest grocery store.

1. Milk

We are all tempted to place milk in the refrigerator door, but that is wrong!

If you place the milk on one of the racks that are present in the door of the refrigerator, you risk exposing the milk to too much warm air every time you open and close the door of the fridge, causing the milk to spoil and causing you to make another premature run to the closest grocery store to get more milk.

Make sure, therefore, that you store your milk in the back of the fridge!

The category of salad greens includes items such as spinach, lettuce, and arugula. You will find these salad makers in grocery store wrapped plastic bags or boxes. When people open these plastic bags, they usually use a bag clip to reseal the bag.

However, that is not the best way to keep your salad greens fresh. To keep them fresh, you need to do the following: place a paper towel on the top of the bag or the box; it will absorb moisture and keep everything fresh.

If not stored correctly in the fridge, your celery can become brown and limp very easily. You don’t want that; more importantly, you don’t want the money you spent at the grocery store to go to waste.

Therefore, make sure that you wrap those pieces of celery in aluminum foil before you put them in the fridge. Doing that ensures that you keep the right amount of moisture, keeping the celery hydrated and crisp—they way it should be eaten!

How many times have you taken cucumbers from the grocery bag straight to the fridge? All the time!! Yeah, we know. That is a mistake, because cucumbers are best stored in room temperature.

Otherwise, and at very low temperatures, your dear cucumbers will become sour and inedible very quickly. The rule to follow with cucumbers is this: as long as it is not sliced up, place it outside the fridge.

Asparagus is very tricky to store and it needs some care and tending to in order to keep it fresh at all times once inside the fridge. Therefore, don’t be tempted to put the asparagus in the fridge in the same bag that in which it was put while it was in the grocery store.

Instead, you need to take a tall glass, place some water inside it, and put the asparagus in. Moreover, you need to use a plastic bag to cover the tips of the asparagus, which will keep odors away from the asparagus.

Cool, you saved on grocery and bought some very cheap cherry tomatoes! However, do you know how to store them in the fridge or are you just going to take some clear plastic bags, put them inside, and throw them in the fridge?

Do that, and those roasted cherry tomatoes won’t taste the way you want them to. The best way to store cherry tomatoes is to put them in a cool and dry place that will allow them to ripen in the most natural way possible.

From cherry tomatoes, we move to tomatoes. The way to store tomatoes in the fridge is to place them upside down and not how you would normally place them. If you do this, you will make sure that they remain ripe for longer.

This is especially important if the stems have been removed from the tomato; it will keep the air from reaching the inside of the tomatoes, stopping them from going rotten.

8. Onions

You should never put onions inside the fridge. Do that and that vegetable soup will not taste the way it should. Onions should not be stored in the fridge because the moisture will cause them to rot very quickly.

Instead, you need to place your onions someplace in your kitchen that is cool and dry, which will allow them to last very long. Also, make sure that you store your potatoes away from your onions.

As with onions, garlic should not be placed inside the fridge. It belongs to the types of vegetables that go rotten if they get exposed to moisture. Therefore, if you want healthy food, make sure that you keep your garlic in an area that is dry and cool.

If the buy garlic that is pre-peeled, then you need to make sure that you put it in vinegar and store it at normal room temperature.

Storing potatoes in the fridge will not help them last longer. On the contrary, it will make them rot quickly than they normally would have done. Therefore, make sure that you store your potatoes the same way you store your garlic and onions: in a dry and cool place.

The only thing to keep in mind is that you need to place the onions and the potatoes apart. Another thing to do is to store some apples next to the potatoes. The former will stop the latter from sprouting.

Whether you do your grocery shopping yourself or get grocery delivery, storing what has been placed in your grocery bag is the same. Therefore, make sure that you treat all of your grocery items in the best way possible. Store them the way we’ve shown you in this article!
