GERD is a condition when the stomach acid would back up to the esophagus and make its way to the mouth, dissolving layers from the teeth.
Sadly, the loss of tooth enamel is permanent, and without proper treatment, you could end up dealing with the rapid decay of the teeth. You should do check-ups with your dentist frequently to spot any unwanted disease at its earliest stages.
#3 – Persistent mouth sores
Don’t freak out, it is normal to get mouth sores from time to time, especially if you sustain an injury or you unintentionally bite your cheek. But if the sores wouldn’t go away (or keep coming back) even after a few weeks, it is time to go to your dentist.
When the mouth sores don’t have that healthy pink color, then there is a chance it is a sign of oral cancer. In the United States, there are more than 9,000 women and 21,000 men over the age of 60 or smokers diagnosed with oral cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.
You need to be alarmed as quickly as possible because oral cancer has a low survival rate, which means self-exams and frequent dentist visit are a necessity!
#4 – Loose teeth and receding gum line
This might be a little hard to understand, but your dentist is the first health professional to detect any sign of osteoporosis, and not your regular doctor.
The reason is your receding gum line and tooth loss are predictors of osteoporosis’ early stages – It is the gradual thinning of bone density and women over 50 are more likely to be affected.
Since the disease wouldn’t show more than a few warning signs, it is hard to be detected until a fracture occurs. This is why a dentist would definitely notice changes in your teeth during the regular check-up.
#5 – Plaque and gum inflammation
The importance of your oral hygiene will have another meaning when you understand that the plaque that builds on your teeth is the same that can cause stroke and heart attacks.
