Most people believe that they’re going to meet life expectancy and live well beyond 70 years. And most people will. But a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association noted that in 21 US states, despite all the improvements in medical assistance, infrastructures, and technology, the chances that someone will die between 20 and 55 increased between 1990 and 2016.

So don’t take average life expectancy for granted. We’re going to discuss a few signs that may indicate some severe health issues. If some of these signs apply to you and you don’t want to become a number in these early death statistics, you better hurry up and schedule a doctor’s appointment.

#1 – +80 beats per minute resting heart rate

A healthy resting heart rate should be somewhere between 60-80 beats per minute. If your resting heart rate is above this interval, you have a significantly higher risk of premature death. This is an excellent marker of poor health condition.

Before seeing a doctor, you could try a few things to lower your heart rate. Regular walks, quitting smoking, exercising often and controlling the amount of stress present in your life could reduce your heart rate almost instantly.

A low heart rate (below 60 bpm for common people – athletes have a healthy low heart rate) could also be problematic. This condition is called bradycardia, which could lead, among things like hypotension and hypertension, to frequent fainting due to insufficient blood flow to the brain and compromise your circulation.

#2 – Bad breath

That’s right. Bad breath. If you or someone close to you notice that you constantly have bad breath, you should start working on it. Drink water and brush your teeth at least twice a day to get rid of bad breath. If it persists, you should talk to your dentist about this problem. It could be caused by serious health issues like infections or even cancer.

#3 – Bad genes

Your genes could have up to a 25% influence on your longevity. So, if your relatives tend to die at an age way below the average life expectancy, you might want to take action because you have probably been dealt with an awful “genetic hand.” This means that you need to take extra caution with the lifestyle you choose.

#4 – Losing sense of smell

According to a study published in the Public Library of Science back in 2016, losing your sense of smell is a genetic sign that death could occur within five years – losing smell could be seen as a strong indicator that people are undergoing a physiological process that could eventually lead to death.

#5 – Pauses in breathing when you sleep

This condition is known as sleep apnea: a sleep disorder in which breathing regularly stops and starts. This is a serious medical condition, that could include grievous complications like daytime fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, and liver problems. It also significantly increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

#6 – Awful health insurance

Having good health insurance might be the difference between having or not having access to fantastical medical assistance within a reasonable time. So don’t be stingy and make sure your health care plan covers a wide range of medical situations! Because when a health issue comes (and it will) the last thing you want to be worried about is how you’re going to pay for medical assistance and how long you’ll have to wait for it.

In the end it might be just about luck, but a healthy lifestyle and some attention to the signals your body is giving you will not only work in your favor concerning longevity; it will also grant you a more lasting quality of life. Because living through your eighties is only worth it if you’re in a good enough shape to enjoy it.
