Not all foods can be stored in the refrigerator. You are probably damaging these foods thinking that they will last longer in the dark cold fridge, ignoring the fact that they cannot handle low temperatures.
1. Nuts
The cold can ruin their flavor, as they can absorb smells surrounding them. This applies to all kinds of nuts.
2. Avocados
The cold seems to hinder their ripening process. Avocados ripen best at room temperature.
3. Tomatoes
They lose their flavor in the cold. Leave them on the counter instead, they’ll develop more flavor over a couple of days.
4. Basil
It is quickly damaged in cold temperature, as well as it will absorb the surrounding smells. Keep it in a glass of water on your counter instead.
5. Potatoes
The fridge ruins their starch by converting it into sugar, making them gritty. When baked or fried, it is thought to be harmful due to the combination of these sugars with the amino acid asparagine.
6. Garlic
The moisture will make it go moldy. Garlic is best kept in a dry and well-ventilated area.
7. Soy milk
This only counts if the container is not opened yet.
8. Honey
It starts to crystallize in the cold, resulting in a grainy lump of sugary goop. Honey can stay fresh and lovely for a very long time, so why keep it in the fridge ?
