Your mental health affects your physical health and vice versa, so when you’re mentally drained, expect to experience body aches like headaches, muscle pain, stomach pain, etc., depending on the severity of your mental exhaustion.

So, what should you do to recharge your energy? There are many ways to boost your mental energy and the go-to outlet is: getting lots of sleep, which helps restore your energy. But sometimes, when you’re suffering from chronic stress and burn out, sleep alone isn’t enough.

#1 – Lay off caffeine

When you’re emotionally and physically exhausted, having coffee, green tea, soda, energy drinks, and other caffeinated beverages and foods, weighs more on your overall health and puts you at risk of anxiety attacks, high blood pressure, headaches, digestive problems, and heart problems which drains more of your energy.

Your brain and body are too exhausted to be dealing with caffeine which will also disturb your circadian rhythm, also known as sleep/wake cycle, if it isn’t already disturbed.

Lay off caffeine and drink warm milk, chamomile tea, or cloves tea which soothes pain and helps you relax.

#2 – Exercise

You’ll always find this advice, so here it is again.

You may say, I’m already physically and mentally drained so how would workout make me feel any better? Actually, sitting around or lying in bed all day may sap your energy even more, if that’s possible, and make you feel worse!

You’re not going to overexert your body, after all, too much exercise is bad for your brain and body as it may weaken your heart muscles and cause severe cognitive fatigue, amongst other things. But, regular physical activity, namely moderate-intensity exercise, relieves stress, helps you cope with depression, anxiety, insomnia, and improves your memory.

You may even try dancing as it’s not only good for your physical health but is also associated with improved moods and overall mental health.

#3 – Meditate/listen to music

When is the best time to meditate? Anytime you could, but especially when you’re physically and mentally tired. So, try all types of meditation including mindfulness meditation, spiritual meditation, focused meditation, movement meditation, mantra meditation, etc.

Meditation helps improve your heart rate and breathing, lowers your blood pressure, and makes you feel at peace.

● Music
Some types of music may annoy you to no end when you’re stressed and exhausted. But now you’re going to pick the right kind of music.
Try listening to relaxing classical music, instrumental versions of your favorite songs, chill-out music, space music, or ambient music.
This type of music reduces stress, elevates your mood, and makes you happier and more relaxed.

#4 – Have your alone-time

You need to recharge, yes? Being around people when you’re mentally fatigued may drain the life out of you!

This isn’t about introversion or extroversion, it’s what everyone should do when they’re exhausted. Studies have shown that spending quality time alone is associated with increased self-confidence, better stress management, and more happiness.

However, spending too much time alone, whether you’re healthy or not, is bad for you as it may contribute to negative feelings and loneliness, so you should always keep balance in your life.

You may spend your quality alone time practicing a hobby, watching a movie, reading a book, traveling alone, cycling, trekking or going on long walks, etc. Sometimes the best escape for relaxation is you and yourself!

#5 – Write

You don’t have to be a professional writer in order to write. You don’t have to write poetry to address your feelings and thoughts. Grab a pen and paper or your laptop and start writing whatever comes to mind, and you’ll see how the words will pour out of you.

Writing is an excellent way of healing; it allows you to tap into your inner self, your soul, and learn things about yourself that you may not have known before.

When you put your feelings, thoughts, and concerns into words, you bring them to life which helps you deal with them better, like taming a beast that eats away at your mental well-being.

So keep a journal or diary and write yourself out of mental exhaustion!

Finally, it’s noteworthy that it often takes months or years to recover from severe burnout, but the help of a professional and your own determination to become stronger and healthier can speed up your recovery.
