5 Bad Habits That Are Surprisingly Good For Your Health!

Last Updated on January 7, 2021

There are some infamous habits related to health and hygiene that we all love to hate, so it’s understandable if you cringe when you see your loved ones biting their nails, cracking their knuckles or necks, listening to loud music on headphones, or not showering enough, etc.

Such habits can truly damage your health so it’s not understandable if you or loved ones aren’t making efforts to get rid of them, especially neck cracking, nail-biting, and…well, especially all of them!

But we need to talk about other habits that everyone tells everyone to quit, such as skipping a shower, sighing too often, or drinking coffee, which are believed to ruin your health or even send you to an early grave when they can actually be beneficial to your overall health!

#1 – Skipping a shower

Wait, we’re not saying you should stink!

Showering too often, meaning every day or even twice day, dries out your skin from natural healthy oils and leaves it dehydrated.

Bathing too much, especially with hot water, also removes the good bacteria, or friendly bacteria, from your skin and disrupts the healthy balance of bacteria in your body which is 85 percent of good bacteria and 15 percent of bad bacteria. This may cause you itchiness and rashes.

So it’s ok to skip a shower once in a while, except for when you sweat too much because if you let sweat linge on your skin, the bacteria will thrive and hell will break loose—aka nasty smell!

#2 – Frequent sighing

You may sigh for different reasons; when you’re nostalgic, relieved, bored, sad, frustrated, etc., but people around you may interpret it solely as a sign of negatives emotions. Little do they know that sighing actually keeps you alive!

According to scientists, a long, heavy sigh helps your lungs remain healthy by opening the alveoli, tiny air sacs that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to move between your lungs and through the bloodstream.

Don’t deprive yourself of the right of sighing and its benefits on your lungs and overall well-being, sigh whenever you want, even if just for the sake of sighing!

#3 – Snacking on Chocolate

If you have the habit of snacking on chocolate, you are not alone and if people tell you it’s bad then they’re right but also wrong! Here is why:

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate has the power to lower LDL, also known as “bad” cholesterol, improve your blood flow, reduce the risk of heart disease, and keep your blood pressure in check all thanks to flavonoids, the bean found in cacao that acts as a powerful antioxidant.

However, eating too much chocolate will definitely backfire and lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disorders.

So, eating chocolate becomes a bad habit when you think limits don’t exist when it comes to chocolate!

#4 – Embracing coffee

People who drink coffee may say it’s a bad habit but they do anyway!

Not only does caffeine turn you into a well-functioning human being, but it also increases your fiber intake, relieves pain and inflammation thanks to its antioxidant effect, and even reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and cirrhosis of the liver—as was proved by scientific studies.

But beware of drinking large quantities of coffee every day, because it can increase your blood pressure which then results in heart disease.

Caffeine intake during afternoons or evenings is also a bad idea because it may cause you insomnia in the long run. Caffeine takes up to six hours to wear off so if you take it a few hours before bed, it may leave you awake for a long time and disrupt your circadian rhythm, your body’s internal clock that decides your sleep/wake cycle.

Just keep your caffeine intake balanced, will you?

#5 – Venting

Complaining, ranting, and venting are all words that spell “bad habit” to many people but these habits are actually good for your health!

Whether you’re angry because of work problems, relationship issues, or for whatever reason, addressing your feelings and voicing your frustration quickly is way healthier than suppressing your anger or letting it stew inside you and take over you which puts you at risk of some health problems.

Some side effects of unmanaged anger may result in increased anxiety, high blood pressure, and insomnia. Try exercising or seeking a counselor when you’re angry.

So what do you think? Will you kill these not-so-bad habits or embrace them in the right way? The key is to always find a balance.
